Off-roading in Slovenia: Why nature conservation and off-road adventure go hand in hand

Off-roading in Slovenia is particularly fun, as many country and forest roads are unpaved. Slovenians preserve the natural landscape, which is why there is an extensive network of gravel roads that are also accessible by regular cars and road motorcycles. This allows for relaxed rides where you can fully enjoy nature and culture. Nature conservation and off-road adventures go hand in hand in Slovenia! A full 13 percent of the area is protected, and the biodiversity is simply impressive. The forests are home to a wealth of wild animals, such as wolves, brown bears, and lynx.

Stol Pass: Adventures for 4x4 Drivers Only

Some off-road routes in Slovenia are affected by closures, such as the popular Stol Pass, which has been closed to motorcycles for years. This means the fun is reserved for 4x4 drivers!

The well-maintained gravel road winds its way leisurely up the mountain, and from the saddle of Stol (1,381 m), things get really exciting – the route to the summit (1,673 m) and the challenging switchbacks offer a real thrill. The descent is considered the ice-toping of the Stol route and is a real highlight for off-road fans in Slovenia! The route has narrow and bumpy sections, and the surface can be rough. This means that you may have to reverse your off-road vehicle a bit on some bends. The reward is an impressive view of the valley, inviting you to stop and enjoy the view during your ride.

Exciting Off-Road Tours in the Karawanks

Fortunately, you'll find numerous off-road trails here that are also accessible by motorcycle – for example, in the Karawanks, where exciting tours await you. One of them takes you over easy-to-ride gravel up to an altitude of 1,530 meters to the Taborniški dom Šija mountain hut. Also worth a visit is the Kativško Sedlo: a roughly 25-kilometer-long gravel road with stunning views along the way.

One of the most beautiful tours in the southwest takes you along an easily navigable forest track to two impressive natural highlights: the mysterious Weavers' Cave and Cerkniško Lake – a fascinating seepage lake that dries up completely in summer. Both destinations are nestled in beautiful natural surroundings and promise a relaxing driving experience.

Culinary Highlights of Off-Road Driving in Slovenia

Slovene cuisine is hearty, down-to-earth, and ideal for recharging your batteries after a long off-road journey. A typical lunch usually consists of a hearty soup, followed by meat with potatoes and a fresh salad – and, of course, a sweet dessert to finish.

For a quick, filling meal on the go, so-called "spoon dishes" are ideal – hearty stews like goulash or minestrone, which are especially popular in rural areas. A real must: jota, an aromatic sauerkraut and bean stew with potatoes, guaranteed to warm and strengthen you.

And what would an off-road tour be without a leisurely afternoon coffee break? Potica – a traditional yeast cake, prepared with walnuts, quark, or up to 80 other fillings depending on the region – is the perfect accompaniment. Just try it and enjoy!
