Off-road in Austria: Hidden trails with stunning natural scenery

The situation for off-road adventures in Austria is difficult, as most unpaved roads are closed to public traffic. But the good news is that with a little research, hidden trails can still be found. While great adventures aren't to be expected, well-maintained gravel fun in beautiful nature is guaranteed.

Legally accessible passes and alpine pasture trails

Off-roading in Austria is a bit more complicated, as only a few trails are accessible, mostly access roads to remote farms and alpine pastures.

These picturesque alpine pasture trails are usually accessible from mid-June to September and lead to managed alpine pastures where you can enjoy local hospitality in idyllic landscapes. Some trails are even accessible from May to the end of October. It's advisable to check the current season and opening hours in advance.

Many alpine pastures also offer overnight accommodation at the end of the trails – either in rooms or cozy dormitories.

The Gailtal Valley in Carinthia is particularly rich in off-road trails, with a 28-kilometer-long natural road to the Straninger Alm and further routes to the Rattendorfer (22 km), Rudnik (27 km), Werbutz (14 km), and Jauken-Almen (27 km). These trails are easily navigable on fine gravel surfaces and reward you with breathtaking mountain panoramas and delicious food at the finish.
