Boltaña is a settlement with just over 1,000 inhabitants, which makes it a larger place by Spanish standards. Its landmark is its castle, which was built in the 10th century by the Arabs as a border fortress to the neighboring Kingdom of Navarre. Its ruins are visible from afar on a hill. After the Christians reconquered Boltaña, it became an important starting point for the expulsion of the Arabs from Spain, which ultimately lasted until the 15th century.

Boltaña is the starting point of an off-road tour through the forest area on the northern slope of the Rio Ara. It leads along a decent gravel track from 640 to 1,251 meters in altitude and is a lot of fun. On the first half, we roll over impeccable gravel, but it then becomes rougher. At least some ground clearance should be available. Once the tree line is reached, a magical view presents itself across to the white mountain peaks of the Ordesa National Park. The final spurt takes us to a small plateau, which is ideal for a break or an overnight stay. Since it is not possible to continue down into the valley of the Rio Cinca, the only option is to head back to Boltaña.
