Restrictions
Not suitable for larger vehicles or motorhomes, as the road runs partly along steeply sloping terrain and it can be difficult to avoid oncoming traffic. Aursjøvegen is not recommended in heavy rain or strong winds, and is often closed in such conditions.

Together with Trollstigen, Aursjøvegen is one of Norway's most spectacular roads. In terms of difficulty, Aursjøvegen is even more challenging, as most of it is gravel. The starting point is Finnset on road 6012. And it gets straight down to business: the narrow gravel road winds its way up to an altitude of almost 1,000 metres via four hairpin bends and through two unlit tunnels. The spectacular views and wild, untouched nature speak for themselves.

Aursjøvegen is young, having been built in 1947 as an access road for the construction site of the Aura hydroelectric dam. The Aurstupet viewpoint is a visual highlight. It is a 400-metre walk to the edge of the cliff, where an incredible view of the beautiful Eikesdalen valley awaits – the drop here is several hundred metres. If you dare, you can lie flat on the rocks at the edge of the precipice and look straight down.

The entire Aursjøvegen is only partially paved and very narrow. Larger vehicles or motorhomes should avoid this route. Parts of the road run along steep slopes with no side barriers. When there is oncoming traffic, it can be tricky to pull over. Aursjøvegen is not recommended during heavy rain or strong winds, and is often closed at such times.
