It is one of Sardinia's most famous and luxurious coastal regions, stretching for approximately 55 kilometers along the island's northeast coast in the province of Olbia-Tempio. Renowned for its emerald-green, crystal-clear waters, fine sandy beaches, and sophisticated resorts, the Costa Smeralda is a haven for celebrities and Sardinia's number one vacation destination. It was Karim Aga Khan IV who discovered the Costa Smeralda in the 1960s. The aristocratic Arab was so captivated that he not only felt compelled to share his discovery with the world, but also transformed the previously idyllic coastline into a luxury retreat for the elite – with the corresponding negative consequences for both people and the environment.

Be that as it may, even in this exclusive enclave of the rich and famous, there are still a few attractions for ordinary people to discover. For example, there's the off-road track, which runs for just under five kilometers along the most scenic part of the Costa Smeralda. It winds through lush vegetation of dense Mediterranean scrub and pine groves that provide natural shade. Juniper, cork oak, and fragrant herbs like rosemary and myrtle create a typical Mediterranean atmosphere.

The track is well-maintained and easy to drive. Despite a layer of sand on the surface, the ground is relatively firm, making it suitable even for less experienced drivers. Two cars can easily pass side-by-side. Since the track is wide and finely gravelled, there's plenty of time to appreciate the surroundings. Along the way, there are also opportunities to access the beach directly, sometimes via narrow footpaths.
