When approaching from the north, use the alternative GPX tracks—otherwise, the climb up the slope is extremely steep… Not permitted every day! Apparently closed to motor vehicles on Wednesdays and Saturdays—obey the signs!

Rifugio Cia Pais
The destination of this 9 km long, easy tour is Colle Basset. Starting below the village of Oulx on the SS 24, it leads through the mountainous landscape of Piedmont past lakes and mountain meadows.
The gravel road starts at Sauze d'Oulx and leads uphill through the coniferous forest. You reach the beautiful Refugio Ciao Pais with its traditional cuisine, which you can enjoy on the beautiful sun terrace with its countless deckchairs. Continuing through the forest past a farmhouse, the stony track with some washouts leads steeply uphill in places on the next section. After a few hairpin bends, you come to a clearing. After a short stretch over tar, the path, which is washed out again, continues to Lago Nero, a small, clear mountain lake with a beautiful shore. Ideal for stopping and taking a deep breath. In the final section, the route passes a small chapel and then joins the Assietta ridge road. Once you reach the pass, you are greeted by an impressive mountain panorama with 360-degree views. The wooden gate that marks the pass serves as a photo spot.
This tour ends at Colle de Basset. Afterwards, you can continue to Sestiere on the SP 23R, follow the beautiful Strada dell'Assietta down into the valley for another stretch or take the same route back.

The road is expected to be partially repaved through October 10, 2025. Unfortunately, I didn't see the sign until I was on my way back… but the stretch up to the ski resort is quite nice.
No-entry sign right at the start at the end of the village. However, there is a "authorized vehicles only" sign and a restaurant 1.2 km away. The road was passable for about three-quarters of the way, but then the snowfields became too much to handle on my own without a second vehicle. I did see motorcycles coming toward me, though. Certain sections had deep ruts and mud. After 2/3 of the way, there was a nice little lake with a picnic table and barbecue area.
