From Sestiere to Fenestrelle on the SP 23, the 32 km long route leads over a mountain ridge with many hairpin bends, glistening mountain lakes and impressive views. (Special feature: the route is closed to motorized traffic on Wednesdays and Saturdays)
The start of the tour is at SP 23 in the village of Sestiere. First, the dusty track winds its way uphill through a few hairpin bends to Colle Basset. A fantastic panoramic view over the Chisone and Susa valleys awaits. A wooden gate marks the beautiful “Strada dell'Assietta” ridge road. In the next section, the slope descends gently, is easy to ride on but bumpy in places. The route continues to be rich in hairpin bends with beautiful views of valleys and small mountain lakes, with individual trees greening the mountain slopes. Via Colle Blegier and Colle Lauson, you reach a turn-off to Lago dell'Assietta, where you can take a break at the beautiful picnic area with benches. From Colle dell'Assietta, the wide track continues down along striking rock faces until the track ends at a tarred road that leads back to SP 23. After the tour, it is worth taking a trip to the village of Fenestrelle to visit the truly impressive fort of the same name.

Question: I'm not sure whether the vehicle ban on Wednesdays and Saturdays applies only in July and August or all year round. According to my plans, I'll be there next week on Wednesday, September 3.
Route officially open. Already a lot of traffic for this time of year.
We drove this route in a south-north direction (starting from Sestriere) at the end of September in extremely bad weather (fog, rain...ZERO visibility) and it was very exciting. Certainly even more impressive when the weather was fine! Hardly any traffic and - at that time - no indication or information about an imminent closure.... If passable again - highly recommended!

Well, it depends on what you mean by "open to traffic." Colle delle Finestre is open, but the Assietta Ridge Road has been closed since October 8 (not the end of October) until June 30, 2025. However, the sign announcing the closure wasn’t posted until October 4... Too bad, because it probably would have been passable despite the wet conditions, but if something goes wrong, you’re the one who loses out twice over, so better to head down into the valley. Too bad!

We drove along the Assietta Ridge Road from Sestriere toward Colle delle Finestre. The ridge road, with its countless passes along the ridge, is truly spectacular. We continued past Colle delle Finestre northward down into the valley to the town of SUSA for a cup of coffee. We didn’t encounter any road closures along the way.
