Community report Sept. 2024: Blocking reported, type and duration unclear. Official confirmation was not available at the time of going to press!

This spectacular 28 km tour near the Italian border offers breathtaking views of endless mountain landscapes with imposing peaks, small villages, and lakes.

The starting point of the route is located at D 902 in Saint Marcellin near Vars. First, you travel along a paved road and cross a river. As you follow the route uphill, expansive views open up over barren mountain slopes and valleys. A short detour on a gravel path takes you through the forest up to Lac de Peyrol, where you’ll find many lovely picnic benches inviting you to rest.
Returning from the detour, you head slightly downhill along a well-maintained section towards Risoul. After passing through an uneven, narrow section, the path winds steeply upward past a small lake. The route continues curving and steeply climbing, eventually leading you to Col de Vabelle, where you’ll experience breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountain peaks.
The now wide and well-maintained gravel track steeply descends across the mountain ridge, partially bordered by orange ski season nets. The long-distance views are stunning. Continuing over Col des Saluces, you descend steeply back into the valley. A fantastic view awaits at Lac de Chabriere. The final stretch takes you through the forest back to D 902 at Vars.

Closure or obstruction

The trail would be very nice. In the direction described, there were at least two road closures on July 20–22, 2026: There’s one at the exit from Risoul that you pass when heading into the ski area or toward Colle Valbelle. However, this one seems to be only temporary (probably in July and August when the lifts are running). There’s also a road closure at Col du Vallon heading toward Vars. That one, however, appears to be permanent. It makes sense, since there are many cyclists and hikers on the way down.

The route was passable; as far as I could tell, there were no road closures. Cool ride—I really enjoyed it.

What is the reason for the suspension? Is the suspension temporary—for example, due to maintenance work—or is it permanent? Best regards

To avoid confusion with the Col de Vars, it is better to refer to it as: Saluces, Col des (28.1 km) 3, which the route crosses.
