This GPS Off-Road Touring Guide was created during our six-month journey across the Arabian Peninsula in our expedition vehicle. The result is a collection of 20 adventurous desert routes in Saudi Arabia and 5 off-road routes in Oman. We drove and documented every route ourselves.

This 4×4 touring guide features 25 detailed off-road route descriptions together with special features and useful background information.

Following exciting sandy trails, we explore the rocky labyrinth of the Hisma Desert, the geological continuation of Wadi Rum in Jordan. The combination of rock and sand also creates fascinating scenery in the Nefud Desert. Around AlUla, away from the famous Nabataean rock-cut tombs, there are impressive natural rock arches to discover.

We then venture deep into the remote Rub al Khali. On the Saudi Arabian side, our destination is an area of lakes surrounded by sand dunes. A highlight for desert travellers is the east-to-west crossing of the Rub al Khali on the Omani side, passing enormous star dunes along the way.

The touring guide also includes useful tips and tricks on off-road driving and navigation.

The Data Download

With the data download, you will receive the following for each route:
– all GPS tracks and waypoints (GPX)

The ‘GPS Data’ folder contains two subfolders. These include the track and waypoint list for each off-road route in two different file formats: a KML file for viewing in Google Earth and a GPX file, the standard exchange format for navigation software and GPS devices.
