In the border area between the two provinces of Aragon and Navarra, you can drive quickly from Burgui to Gallués in the valley of the Rio Salazar on the national road. If you want to go fast and comfortably. But if you have time and fancy an off-road adventure, you can take the track over the Sierra Alta, which connects the two places in an exciting way.

From Burgui, the road goes ten kilometers north on asphalt to Vidángoz. About two kilometers behind the town, a forest track turns left. A track that takes no prisoners: rough gravel, boulders, washouts, gullies, muddy passages. A forest vehicle might come through here now and then, and the path is accordingly overgrown.

Once it has reached its height, it is a little more peaceful. It passes the 1,068 meter high Sierra Alta mountain, which gives this mountain ridge its name, and descends slowly in moderate curves. A short serpentine section up the mountain is in between, then the track reaches the town of Ustés. Turn right and after just under three kilometres the sign for Gallués comes into view. Its unusual coat of arms depicts a wolf carrying a lamb in its mouth. This symbolises sheep farming in the valley as well as the fact that the herds must be protected from wild animals.
