Collada Fonda
In Spain, a collada is the name given to a mountain saddle or a pass. Like the Collada Fonda. It connects the two towns of Molló and Setcases in the eastern Pyrenees. And it does so on a gravel surface with great views. The wide, finely gravelled track doesn't exactly promise the ultimate off-road adventure, but it does offer beautiful panoramas. So you'll have plenty of time and leisure to let your eyes wander while you drive.
Just after Molló (road no. 38), a medium-wide track branches off to the left and winds past the hamlet of Espinavell, initially along a stream. However, it soon leaves the stream and begins to climb the mountainside in neat serpentines. The surface is flat, the bends are perfectly laid out. Suddenly you find yourself on the bare saddle of the 1,911-metre-high Collada Fonda. The panoramic view is breathtaking, civilisation is far away. What a place!
Still easy to navigate, the route winds downhill behind the pass. It leaves the hamlet of Cabanes de la Serra on the left, follows a stream at the end and finally meets the asphalt at road no. 5264. Turning left, you reach Setcases after two kilometers, and to the right, the steep switchbacks lead up to the Vallter 2000 ski area at an altitude of 2,010 meters.
