There are two ways to drive up to Castell de Mur. One boring one on asphalt and one exciting one on gravel. We don't have to think about it for long... and drive ten kilometers west from Tremp on the C-1311. This approach is on winding asphalt and overcomes almost 400 meters in altitude. A treat for fast road sweepers.

But they have to be careful not to miss the turnoff to the left onto a track that, like a kind of roller coaster, heads up and down and left and right towards the town of Meüll. Wide road, fine gravel, that's what makes it fun. After Meüll, the road surface changes from easy to difficult - it suddenly goes steeply uphill, the path becomes narrower, gullies and furrows get in our way. One last detour up to 1,003 meters, then the track descends to Castell de Mur.

A short walk and we are standing on a hill with a magnificent view over the Tremp basin. The castle was built in the 11th century by the Arabs to secure the border. It is 31 metres long, and its one metre thick walls are between 14 and 18 metres high. Next to the castle is the church of Santa Maria de Mur, the ecclesiastical counterpart to the military fortress. To get to the starting point of Tremp, you can either return the same way or take the asphalt road that follows the track.
