To the ruins of Cajol
On the northern slope of the Rio Ara there is a track that leads from about 700 meters up through beautiful forest areas and steadily uphill to the ghost village of Cajol at 1,356 meters. It is nice and wide and almost always in good condition. Just the thing for a nice off-road tour.
The start: Coming from Sabinanigo on the N-260, you pass Fiscal, follow the course of the Rio Ara and after about eight kilometers turn off onto the aforementioned track to the north. Fine gravel, a handful of bends, everything is easy going. The ride takes place almost entirely in the forest and only occasionally offers a sideways glance down into the valley. Around ten kilometers later the ruins of Cajol come into view. The history of the village is tragic: because a dam was planned in the region, the inhabitants of Cajol were forcibly resettled. The dam project disappeared into the depths of bureaucracy, but for Cajol, all help came too late - the village is still deserted today. Whether it will ever be repopulated is anyone's guess.
The route now makes a U-turn and heads back to the Ara Valley. A little bumpy at first, then well-maintained again. A few bends downhill, the last stretch straight ahead, then you reach the Rio Ara and the N-260. Turn left to Jànovas, from there on to Boltaña.
