Difficult tracks to Abenilla
If you've got the taste for it and are looking for more challenges, you only need to drive about 25 kilometers further north. There, in the valley of the Rio Guarga, a "breathtaking" track begins, in the truest sense of the word, which circles north past the ghost village of Abenilla over a mountain ridge into the valley of the Rio Basa. You can reach the starting point from Arguis either via the A 23 motorway or a country road that leads eastwards around the Sierra Belarra.
The off-road fun begins as soon as the track branches off from the A-1604 country road. Narrow road, loose rubble, dense trees along the side of the road. Fortunately, the bends are not too tight, so we can climb the southern slope of the mountain massif relatively quickly. A plateau opens up, and to the right it goes to the ghost village of Abenilla. A break with a visit or an overnight stay - both are possible. And necessary. Because the next section is serious: the path becomes so narrow that an off-road vehicle can barely fit between rocks and trees. Deep longitudinal ditches and transverse gullies open up. The tires scrape constantly uphill over rough stones. Then, when switchbacks come into play every now and then, things get exciting. In narrow places with abysses, you should be two people in the car, and on the motorbike you should not be afraid of heights.
The route reaches its peak at 1,226 meters and from then on it only leads downhill. It doesn't get any less demanding, on the contrary - steep sections, bends and swampy areas allow the off-roader to use all his skills. There is almost no room to turn a car around. The situation only eases a little before Yebra de Basa in the river valley. Shortly afterwards we reach the Rio Basa and the N-260 road.
