North of the town of Vidrà there is a mountain range called Serra de Santa Magdalena. Nobody knows whether it got its name from the church on the previous tour (“Santa Magdalena del Mont”) or whether it is the other way around. But what we do know is that the off-road tour through this Serra is a very promising affair.

s tour, you turn right a kilometer before, exactly eleven hundred meters after the Collada de Collfred (1,327 m). On a well-trodden farm track, you go quickly and always slightly downhill along the contours of the mountain. Sometimes in the forest, sometimes over meadows and alpine pastures with beautiful views. The last section is on asphalt, then you reach Vitrà.

From here it goes uphill again. Still on decent farm tracks, the well-trodden surface of which is only occasionally interrupted by coarser gravel. Alpine pastures and meadows line the route. At 1,215 meters, the route passes the Coll de Barretó and shortly afterwards reaches its highest point at 1,360 meters. Regularly interspersed bends add variety to the otherwise leisurely ride. On the last few kilometers, asphalt whizzes past beneath us again, then we reach the main road at Vallfogona de Ripollès. There you have the choice: turn right to Olot, turn left to Ripoll.

Closure or obstruction

The last third of the way to Point B is private property and is neither passable nor permitted. There are large trees blocking the path, and the forest terrain is impassable for a large machine with luggage due to massive ruts and mud holes. I had to be picked up by locals. Even starting from Point A, there are frequent blocked-off areas, and the only way to bypass them is through the mud. So I’d avoid the entire route ;) Or, for off-road pros with lightweight machines, I’d suggest turning back halfway and heading down toward Santa Maria instead.
