It is long, varied and colourful. The tour around the Pantà de Susqueda reservoir. Long because almost 50 kilometres away from the asphalt require stamina and concentration. Varied because the range of the road surface ranges from easy to moderately difficult. And colourful because the blue reservoir, the green vegetation and the reddish-grey rock create a great picture. The dam, which was inaugurated in 1968, is located in the municipality of Osor and dams the water of the Ter river. Its wall is 165 metres high and 360 metres long.

Start of the tour in Rupit. The mountain village with its medieval alleys is a real gem and worth a walk. Back in the saddle or behind the wheel, we drive about five kilometres south-west on the BV 5208 road, then turn left onto a gravel track. This gradually winds down from 800 to 400 metres in altitude in changing curve radii towards the reservoir. You shouldn't enjoy the views of the lake that appear now and then for too long, as rough gravel, stones and tight bends keep demanding your attention.

When you reach the reservoir, you continue on firm ground, and now you can enjoy the views of the lake without worry. They are really something: rocky islands, churches and the roofs of sunken villages can be seen in the water. A short stretch of asphalt winds up to the dam, then it's back to gravel.

Below Puig Gallinàs, the route leaves the reservoir and gains height in beautiful curves. The road surface gets worse, coarse gravel and scree garnish the track. The forest becomes denser, the hairpin bends more frequent. But all in all, it's a decent ride. Just before Rupit, the track ends, and very soon you're sitting in one of the town's cozy pubs with a well-earned après drink.

Closure or obstruction

The route from Rupit to the Presa de Susqueda dam is largely overgrown and therefore unsuitable for a van. The southern route along the reservoir is currently closed (see photos).
