Near Sos del Rey Catolicò there is another gem of medieval architecture - the Castillo de Roita. Not quite as well preserved as its counterpart in Sibirana, it is still worth a detour. All the more so as it takes place on a very nice gravel track.

The start: About 500 meters south of Navardùn, a small road branches off, which we follow for about a kilometer. Then turn right and go down a wide path that leads uphill alternately over open areas and dense mixed forest. Soon the two towers of the Castillo can be seen in the distance. The complex itself stands above a small clearing and can be reached via a short footpath.

The Castillo was built at the beginning of the 11th century by King Sancho III on the foundations of the Muslim fortress Charat-Kachtilla. It served to secure the outer borders of Pamplona, which at the time was in constant dispute with the neighboring Kingdom of Navarre. In contrast to the Castello di Sibirana, however, it is falling into disrepair, and one of the two towers is only half standing.

From now on, the route goes downhill on a simple, wide path through a beautiful deciduous forest. A few tight bends provide some variety, then the route meets the asphalt road, where we turn right to Sos del Rey Catolicò.
