This impressive gravel road leads to a height of 1,530 metres - almost at eye level with the surrounding peaks of the majestic Karawanks. After the climb, the picturesque Taborniški dom mountain hut invites you to enjoy the breathtaking view while refreshing yourself with mountain cheese and other delicacies. From Tržič through a narrow gorge into the quiet Jelendol on asphalt roads and further along forest roads into the mountains. At a sharp angle, the gravel road turns right to the hut, and several cattle gates have to be opened (and definitely closed again) along the way. An alternative route is available for the return journey, which is in places quite washed out and strewn with rubble. It leads back to Jelendol.

We were able to explore this amazing route even in a fully loaded 3.5-ton Sprinter that had been converted into a camper. There was snow on the gravel road just once, so we had to improvise. The mountain hut was still closed. We were alone up there and spent the night in perfect weather. The route was mostly dry. The round trip followed a river for a long stretch. It was a great experience!

A beautiful route, mostly through forests with glimpses of the valley; in the higher elevations, wide-open spaces with views of snow-capped mountains. Only the last short stretch up to the cabin was impassable because ice and snow made the path impassable for us. Otherwise, the route was easily manageable for our vehicle; we just had to back up a bit when a long timber truck came toward us.
