The bad news first - the Stol Pass has been closed to motorcycles for a long time. The fast guys with their loud sports enduros must have gone too wild. Their own fault. If only leisurely touring enduros were on the Stol, it would probably still be open today. Be that as it may - the driving fun that crossing the Stol Pass offers is reserved for 4x4 drivers.
The Stol is 1,381 meters high and lies in the Italian-Slovenian border area. From Italy, you approach the pass via Tarcento and after crossing the top of the pass, you reach the Slovenian side down to Kobarid in the Soča valley.

The start is the asphalted SR 646, then continue on road no. 401. The entrance to the off-road section is behind the hamlet of Sedlo Učja. There, an easy-to-ride gravel track with a few transverse gullies leads steadily uphill through deciduous forest and reaches the saddle of the Stol at an altitude of 1,381 meters. Above the tree line, there is now a wide view of the surrounding peaks. At a constant altitude, the track then follows the contour of the ridge, passes the ascent to the summit of the Stol with its tower (1,673 m) that is closed to motor vehicles, and finally plunges down the serpentines to the village of Podbela. This descent is the real crux of the route. The narrow gravel track meanders down the valley along a meadow slope. The gravel is sometimes loose and rough, and some hairpin bends are so tight that you have to push back. Nevertheless, you should take the time every now and then to admire the view down into the valley.

Conditions, closures and tips — from members who drove here recently.

I rode the route in May and didn't see any obstacles or closures; the trail was very easy to ride on. There were a lot of paragliders out there.

The south side is closed for roadwork. We drove through on Sunday and it was fine. At the top, a farmer was blocking the road with his cow and wasn't happy when asked to let us pass. Overall, a good route with nice views.

The pass is passable in a Fiat Ducato L2, 2WD. The hairpin turns are a bit tight but manageable.

Fully passable again! The avalanche debris has been cleared away and there’s no snow left. It’s a bit narrow in places between the larger rocks, and some of the switchbacks are too tight for my vehicle to navigate in one go. A great and really exciting track.

A beautiful route with fantastic views. Especially when coming from the south. On the south slope, the trail is blocked by the remains of a small avalanche shortly after the large antenna at about 1,200 meters. However, with a good approach angle, adequate ground clearance, and the use of ramps and low gear, you can drive over it. We tried it, but turned back afterward because deep snow remained shortly after that. Presumably, this obstacle will be cleared away in a few weeks when spring really gets going.

We drove over the Stol Pass on August 18, 2025, as described; it’s once again possible to do so without any problems! The construction work just before the ridge has been completed. Slope stabilization measures have been carried out, and part of the road has been paved with concrete. The route is beautiful, but the descent was quite challenging for us. Luckily, we didn’t encounter any oncoming traffic; in fact, we were the only vehicle on the entire route! Have fun again to everyone who drives over the pass.

A very pleasant drive in a 4x4. No heavy equipment is needed! We didn’t even engage four-wheel drive. The locals drive up in regular cars! If you’re attached to your oil pan, I’d advise against it! Closed to motorcycles. However, the route is very popular with mountain bikers! You have to be especially careful here, particularly on the hairpin turns. Absolutely suitable for 4x4 beginners. I would start in Podbela and drive in the opposite direction as described in the book. I think the view and the driving challenge are the best here!
