It is called the Drina, a river formed by the confluence of the Piva and Tara rivers. These rivers originate in Montenegro and merge precisely at the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina to become the Drina. To head south from the Piva border crossing in Montenegro, there are two options:
Follow the M3 along a picturesque gorge carved by the Piva to Plužine.
Or take a challenging track over a high plateau between the two source rivers.
As off-road enthusiasts, the choice is easy. We head straight for the paved mountain road that winds uphill to the east between the two border checkpoints. After about twelve kilometers, the asphalt ends at Crkvičko, and the gravel adventure begins. The track winds more or less at the same elevation across the plateau. Its surface is mostly medium-sized stones or dirt. Technically, it’s not very demanding—except for a few tricky narrow sections through wooded areas.
There are several opportunities to take a detour to a viewpoint and enjoy stunning views of the Piva Gorge below. About two kilometers past the hamlet of Unač, the track reconnects with asphalt. To the left, you’ll reach the village of Trsa; to the right, the road leads to Plužine.

Closure or obstruction

The track was epic, but toward the end it winds down into a forest and gets narrower. A few scratches on the car are unavoidable.

One of the most scenic routes, offering spectacular panoramic views above the gorge. A varied trail of gravel, meadows, and mud in the forest. Four-wheel drive is only necessary on one forest section, which is steep and muddy. Driven with a Toyota Hilux, as well as previously with a T4 Syncro. Important!!! Access to the track is between the two border posts of Bosnia and Montenegro. If coming from Bosnia, first enter via the border checkpoint and inform the border guard that you want to return to the track. It’s no problem.
