Circle track to the Lake Hridsko
The Prokletije massif lies at the tri-border area of Montenegro, Albania, and Kosovo, spanning approximately 90 kilometers in length and 40 kilometers in width. Towering, sharp-edged peaks and glacially carved U-shaped valleys give Prokletije a high-Alpine appearance, unmatched anywhere else in the Balkans. This makes a visit to this remote and otherworldly mountain range all the more captivating.
The northern part of Prokletije barely stretches into Montenegro, providing the perfect opportunity for an off-road adventure through this stunning massif. The highlight of this journey is a circular tour to Hridsko Jezero, the "Lake of Happiness." From Plav, you start on an asphalt road heading eastward via Komarača for about 11 kilometers. After climbing to 1,600 meters, you’ll reach a Y-junction at Babino Polje. Take the right fork, and the crunch of gravel under your tires begins. The road is wide, with a well-maintained surface, flanked by dense forests on both sides—a pleasant and easy drive.
About nine kilometers later, a footpath branches off to the left, leading downhill for approximately 500 meters. This path brings you to the breathtaking Hridsko Jezero, perched at an altitude of 1,970 meters. Though small—measuring only 500 by 160 meters—its beauty is immense: dark blue, shimmering waters surrounded by green conifer forests and rugged rocks, with the peaks of Prokletije providing a dramatic backdrop.
The tranquil view is a welcome respite because the following section of the route presents challenging terrain. The forest thins out, offering spectacular vistas, but the gravel becomes coarser, with stones, ruts, and rocky edges littering the path. The route reaches its highest point at 2,167 meters, though the difficulty does not ease immediately. It’s only after passing the katun of Boićevica that the track becomes more forgiving. Medium-grade gravel leads downhill through dense forest, eventually returning you to your starting point at Babino Polje.
