In the border region to Kosovo
The town of Berane lies less than 20 kilometers in a straight line from the border with Kosovo. Once an autonomous region of Yugoslavia, Kosovo became a constituent part of Serbia in 2003 and has been an independent state since 2008. However, Kosovo's international status remains in limbo, as Serbia still officially regards it as a province, and the UN has avoided making a definitive statement. Nonetheless, it is widely assumed that Kosovo will remain independent.
If you’d like to catch a glimpse of Kosovo, you can do so on an off-road tour east of Berane. The route follows a semi-circular path, bringing you within two kilometers of the border while passing through dense forests and barren highlands. The terrain offers a mix of visual and driving challenges: fine gravel, coarse gravel, stones, rocks, forest paths, and narrow sections. Riding an enduro bike is a thrilling experience, and driving an off-road vehicle is just as enjoyable. However, tackling the route with a larger 4x4 vehicle requires significant off-road experience and confidence navigating tight passages.
The tour begins on asphalt, heading approximately 10 kilometers into the mountains from Berane. At the village of Kaludra, the asphalt gives way to fine gravel. From here, you enter the forest and climb the mountain. The gravel becomes coarser, the potholes deeper, and the ledges steeper. A clearing briefly lets the sun through before you continue uphill in the forest.
This is where the most challenging section of the route begins. The forest path becomes increasingly narrow and rutted, demanding precise control at the handlebars or steering wheel.
The reward for your effort is a high plateau at 1,822 meters, offering stunning panoramic views. Scattered across the alpine meadows are several katuns—small clusters of wooden houses typical of Montenegro. From here, it’s just a few downhill kilometers on an easy track before the tour ends in the valley at the M5 road. Turning left takes you back to Berane, while turning right leads onward to Rožaje.
