Through the forests of Velika Kapela

This tour takes you through a wonderful forest area in the Croatian hinterland for 22 km. The peaks in the area reach the 1000 meter mark here. Full vegetation with lush meadows and dense forest characterize the route.

The starting point of the tour is at Jasenak on the 5191. The wide, slightly gravelled track branches off from the tarmac road. It winds past tall fir trees and goes slightly uphill. Many hiking trails lined with flags lead into the forest everywhere. Beware of bear territory. In a small clearing, there is a lovely picnic area with benches next to a wooden hut. The gravel track now leads slightly downhill past small ponds. Continuing to follow the track across clearings and through the beautiful forest area, you reach the Matic poljana plateau. The memorial with the "frozen soldiers" is well worth seeing - stone blocks that stand majestically in rows on a meadow. The route then leads onto a narrow tarmac road near the village of Mrkopalj. This is the end point of the tour in a very idyllic valley.
