The Mali Alan Pass is a genuine gravel pass and is located in the majestic Velebit mountain range. The southern ramp offers unique views of the Adriatic coast and the surrounding mountain landscapes. A special feature of this route is that it is partially covered in deep gravel, which requires special caution when driving. The pass itself is a highlight for nature and mountain lovers and is located in the middle of Winnetou country.

The route begins in the town of Obrovac, which lies on the Zrmanja River, and heads east. About 12 km north of Obrovac, the tarmac road ends and the track begins. It runs through exposed hairpin bends past rugged steep slopes and rock formations and offers picturesque views of the surrounding area.

The descent to the north initially runs through rugged karst rock, later further down through oak, pine and beech forests.

We connected this track to Track 21 and basically rode downhill. Easy to ride. At the war memorial—where you should definitely stop to pay your respects—there’s a “No Entry” sign, so you’ll be going uphill. I think it’s only for vehicles weighing 5 metric tons or more, though.

For me, the Mali Alan was the very first gravel pass I ever drove. The videos I’d watched on YouTube beforehand didn’t show just how difficult it really was. We drove it right after it had been freshly graded, so the surface hadn’t had a chance to settle yet. Luckily, I have to say, we drove the pass in the opposite direction, so the extremely soft gravel was on the downhill section. If we’d gone the other way, I wouldn’t have been able to handle it. Still, it was a huge challenge for me as a woman. It’s definitely a spectacular pass with gorgeous scenery, but I wouldn’t drive it a second time. I’m just not a fan of gravel roads.
