The first part is fantastic, with great views; the second part takes you through the woods and is fairly unspectacular. Note that after the trail ends, you’ll have to drive 40 km on a narrow, winding road to get back to civilization.
Canyonland in Velebit
This route through the Velebit mountains is one of the highlights in Croatia. It does not pose any great challenges in terms of driving technique. The entry to the route is above Karlobag, and a 6 km long branch off the D26 leads to the starting point.
The route is an official connecting road to Krasno and is well developed and relatively wide throughout. In some places, deep and coarse gravel and some washouts are to be expected, and the route has numerous bends.
A tunnel carved into the rock limits the clearance height to 3.8 meters.
The route impresses with the lonely mountain world through which it leads. Right at the beginning, it runs partly exposed along the slope or leads spectacularly through rock passages. Sometimes it goes through a labyrinth of rocks, then again through deep, fairytale forest. Wonderful views of the Velebit mountains open up again and again.
Because the route is partly cut into steep slopes, there is an increased risk of rockfall, especially when it is wet.
