Coastal tracks near Artentiera
In the far northwest of Sardinia, a track crisscrossed with fine and coarse gravel runs for kilometers directly above the sea, making it one of the most beautiful coastal routes. At times, it dips down to the water's edge, offering secluded swimming spots in tranquil coves. A cultural highlight of this tour is a visit to the former silver mine of Argentiera.
500 meters north of the village of Palmadula, on the SP 57, the route branches off to the left (west). While it winds its way gently downhill, the vegetation grows quite densely into the road in places – scratches on your vehicle are almost unavoidable. It then reaches the sea at the bay of Porto Palmas. With its peaceful location, Porto Palmas is a good first stop – perhaps for a refreshing dip.
The route continues along the coast, always about ten to fifteen meters above sea level. Here, the track reveals its most beautiful side: breathtaking scenery and relatively easy to drive. Two kilometers later, a parking lot and a cliff mark the end of the trail.
For off-road enthusiasts, the return journey offers a real treat: After just under a kilometer, a track branches off to the left, a truly challenging one. It climbs a hilltop through deep ruts and furrows, before descending again on deep sand to Porto Palmas.
After this exertion, a bit of culture is well-deserved – a visit to the former silver mine of Argentiera, located a little further south. Even the Romans searched for silver here, and the mine was finally closed in 1963. Today, Argentiera is considered one of the most important examples of industrial archaeology in Sardinia and is a protected site.
