We drove into the area via a small pass from the west, not from the north. There were no ‘no entry’ signs or anything of the sort. This route is well worth taking. We also saw plenty of vehicles in the area, including some without 4x4 capability, so it’s safe to assume that the northern access route is currently open as well. For an extra adventure, you can also enter or leave the area from the south, though this involves crossing a water crossing (50–60 cm deep). Highly recommended.
Capo Comino
Capo Comino, with its lighthouse, is the easternmost point of Sardinia. But that's not its only superlative: with its white sandy beach, magnificent dunes, and turquoise waters, it seems to have sprung from a fairytale. This has clearly impressed the film industry, as the cape has served as a filming location on several occasions. Just offshore lies the tiny island of Isola Ruja, which you can reach by walking or swimming. The lighthouse, the Faro di Capo Comino, is also well worth a visit.
The beauty of this corner of Sardinia is best admired—you guessed it—on an off-road tour. The route begins on asphalt about 16 kilometers east of Siniscola. At a hamlet that shares the same name as the cape, signal left and continue on the asphalt. It winds beautifully along the coastline, passing Isola Ruja and the lighthouse.
From here, the surface changes to gravel. The route is generally easy to drive and consists of fine, sometimes sandy, gravel. Occasional washouts and scattered large stones add some variety, but remain easily manageable. The wide track gently skirts a karst hilly landscape, bordered by forests and bushes, offering a relaxed off-road experience in a stunning setting. The loop is completed by returning along the same route.
