Through the Sulcis-Mountains
The Sulcis Mountains in the southwest of Sardinia are 600 million years old and are one of the oldest and most geologically interesting mountain formations on the island. With heights of almost 1,000 meters, they tower above the coastal lowlands and offer a mixture of rocky landscapes, dense forests and high biodiversity that is worth seeing. The Sulcis Mountains have also been known for their wealth of mineral resources since ancient times. The Phoenicians and Romans already exploited the ore deposits, and later the area played an important role in Sardinian mining. Even today you can find abandoned mines that offer insights into the island's industrial history.
We off-roaders find some particularly interesting tracks here that cross the mountains. One of them starts on the SS 293 in the village of Piscinas, meanders south and climbs over a ridge until it meets asphalt again between Sant' Anna Aresi and Teulada. The route does not pose any particular challenges, so you can enjoy the hilly landscape with its vegetation of maquis, cork oaks and holm oaks in peace and quiet.
