The Riu di Gutturu Cardaxius is a short river on the southwest coast of Sardinia in the province of Sud Sardegna. It runs through a deep gorge with steep rock walls near the towns of Fluminimaggiore and Buggerru. As a seasonal river, it usually only carries water in the rainier winter and spring months, which decreases considerably in the hot summer months. But the rain in winter and spring is enough to turn the otherwise sluggishly flowing river into a raging torrent. So raging that it repeatedly washes away entire sections of the bank. This happened in 2018.

The authorities have been working since then to restore the track that accompanies the Gutturu Cardaxius. However, they are not quite finished yet. In 2024, our scouts reported that the track is still not passable for four-wheel drive vehicles, but is passable for enduros with the appropriate skills. At the moment it seems like motorcyclists can look at the slipped area and decide whether to continue or turn around. 4x4 drivers should definitely take the track back to the SS 126 at the junction on the left, 6.5 kilometers after the start (see tour "From Buggerru to the mountains").

Overall, this route is extremely demanding even without the washed away section, as the path mostly leads above the river through a deep gorge. Narrow and bumpy, it requires a lot of experience.

Closure or obstruction

Good evening We tried to ride the route today on our ATV. However, from N 39°22.5013' E 008°26.1349' onwards, it is impossible to get through on an ATV, or even on a touring motorbike. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Kind regards, Christian Ahrendt
