Narrow gauge railway
Trains have been running in Sardinia since the beginning of the 20th century. As so-called narrow-gauge railways, however, they only cover a small part of the island. Their economic boom came after World War II, when tourism discovered the island. The "Trenino verde", the little green train, was launched for tourism at the end of the 1980s. Today, this tourist attraction runs on four different lines with a total length of around 400 kilometers. Regular scheduled services are only available in summer, however.
One of these lines touches Lago Alto Flumendosa and is the starting point for a short but impressive off-road tour. It begins at the southeast end of the reservoir. The gravel road it runs on is quite narrow, but easy to drive on. Small differences in altitude, a constant up and down. Overall, a relaxed affair with initially very beautiful views of the lake. Whether you cross the river by bridge or ford at the beginning is a question of your sense of adventure and the water level.
