Monte Ferru
Monte Ferru, the "iron mountain", rises between Cuglieri and Santa Lussurgiu in the coastal hinterland of the western Sardinian province of Oristano. It is the largest volcano in Sardinia and gets its red color from the iron-rich basalt and trachyte rock. Rainfall from the sea mainly falls on the north and west flanks, which has given rise to dense cork and holm oak forests. On the summits of the massif, however, there are many bare areas with great views of the sea. The highest point is Monte Urtigo at 1,050 meters.
You can't get quite that high with a four-wheel drive or enduro, but 982 meters doesn't sound so bad. But the difference in altitude of this tour, which starts from sea level, is not its only asset. Both the length of 22 kilometers and the rough road surface speak volumes. This is something that off-road enthusiasts will appreciate, but beginners should avoid.
The first stretch from Santa Caterina di Pittinari is quite easy to drive. Tar, concrete and fine gravel alternate. Enough time to enjoy the wonderful views of the coast. A kind of high plateau follows, then things get serious. The previously easy gravel path turns into a tough off-road track that takes no prisoners. Rough stones, boulders, deep gullies, hard ledges - everything is there. Depending on how much the rain in winter and spring has damaged the path, it may be that you cannot continue without moving stones. With four-wheel drive and enduro.
Without high ground clearance and low gear, nothing works here anyway. If you are on a travel enduro, you should not dare to tackle the track alone and instead take a push assist with you.
Shortly before reaching the SS 20, one last dream view awaits you, then the tour is over.
