Lago Alto Flumendosa is a reservoir in the heart of Sardinia in the Barbagia region. It is one of the island's lesser-known but equally impressive natural attractions. Located about 40 kilometers northwest of Nuoro, it is surrounded by a picturesque mountain backdrop, making it a popular destination not only for nature and hiking enthusiasts, but also for the off-road community. The reservoir was created in the 1950s by building a dam in the Flumendosa River, has an area of around five square kilometers and a maximum depth of 50 meters.

Branching off from the SS 389, a route that is particularly tricky in the second section leads first along the bed of the Rio Piricanas and later up to the Flumendosa dam. The stretch at the beginning is steep, but easy to manage. Wide track, decent gravel. Behind the almost 1,000 meter high edge, the route goes downhill until you reach the bed of the Rio Piracanas at a height of around 250 meters. Since the river is usually full of water, fording it is anything but easy depending on the time of year.
Once you reach the other bank, the route climbs harmlessly towards the reservoir at first. Then things get tricky: narrow, steep and roughly graveled, the track first winds down to the foot of the dam, then climbs back up to the road on the opposite side of the valley.

The driving technique has to be perfect, and the person and the vehicle have to be in harmony. If everything fits, you have a first-class off-road experience.
