Giant tombs are the largest cult sites in Sardinia. Like the rock tombs, the Domus de Janas, they belong to the Bonnanaro culture, the precursor culture of the Nuragic. They consist of a portal up to four meters high and a narrowing gallery behind it. This can be up to 25 meters long and is only accessible through a very small opening. Over 100 skeletons have been found in such giant tombs. The sites were built between 2200 and 1600 BC. Some researchers claim that the portals are reminiscent of a phallus. Is that true? The best thing to do is to take a look at such a giant tomb yourself and then decide. For example - what else? - on an off-road tour.

It starts at the Genna Croce pass and swings up and down in a wide arc to the west. Decent gravel surface, wide road, heights between 900 and 1,100 meters. After eight kilometers there is a depression, a turnoff to the right and up to the giants' tomb. After the break we go back the same way and continue on the main track. Four kilometers later we come to the next turnoff. This time we turn left to the Pisu Cerbu lookout point. Back at the turnoff we head south on what is still a reasonable gravel track and finally we reach the asphalt of the road that leads left to Talana.

This route could be rated as “easy” in terms of difficulty. Despite its ease, it’s a very beautiful one—one of the most beautiful I’ve driven in Sardinia! It offers amazing views of the surrounding mountains, and the second detour (the one to the tomb) leads to a mesmerizing spot: all of a sudden, it feels like you’re in a Western movie. Definitely recommended!

The best and most expansive view of the trip so far—we even saw some animals along the way. Toward the end, the ascents were absolutely stunning, with a panoramic view you don't often come across. Highly recommended!!!
