This beautiful route follows the former coastal road, which turns inland here to bypass the large dune of San Nicolo on solid ground. When it later became possible to build a road across the sand that follows the coastline, the old route became obsolete. Nevertheless, it is a special treat to drive on this road—which features many structures and plenty of easily navigable curves—with studded tires. The road surface is also suitable for regular vehicles.

Dune di San Nicolò
The almost three-kilometer-long beach of San Nicolò, which is relatively wide by Mediterranean standards, is usually deserted, even in high season. This is probably because it is quite difficult to reach via the SP 83 provincial road. Luckily, because this means that we will hopefully be able to enjoy this gem for a long time to come.
In addition to the SP 83, there is another access road to San Nicolò, and it leads over ... gravel, you guessed it. This route is great fun to do with any type of vehicle, because in addition to the off-road feeling, it also offers a first-class landscape experience - the dune of San Nicolò. This huge sand hill rises directly behind the beach, surrounded by Mediterranean pines and pine trees. Even before reaching the dune, there is another natural spectacle along the way: the natural lake Piscina Morta.
The start of this route is on the SP 83 west of Fluminimaggiore, and it ends on the same road by the sea. There you turn left and after two kilometers you reach Buggerru.
