Catena de Marghine
The Catena de Marghine is a striking mountain range in the northwest of Sardinia, which stretches across the provinces of Sassari and Nuoro. It includes several peaks and hills, the highest elevation being Monte Muggianeddu at 1,276 m. Other notable peaks are Monte Novu (1,214 m) and Monte Bardia (1,154 m). The mountain range forms a striking border between the Macomer valley in the west and Barbagia in the east. The steep, rocky slopes of the mountains are characterized by lush forests and dense, diverse vegetation, including cork oaks, holm oaks and Sardinian juniper.
A track leads across the Catena de Marghine, which is varied on a mostly decent road, partly through dense oak forests and partly over open plateaus. The track does not pose any particular difficulties, apart from the narrow sections with overhanging bushes that are common in Sardinia. Otherwise, forest and field paths dominate. The cultural highlight is the Villa Piercy near Baddhe Saliges. It was built at the end of the 19th century by the English nobleman Sir John Piercy and can be visited.
