Attention! The route is also closed on Tuesday. Not just on Thursdays, as the book still states!

Colle del Sommeiler
From the village of Bardonecchia on the SS 335 near the French border, the 25 km-long stitch leads to Colle Sommeiler in the Piedmont Alps. (Special feature: the route is closed to motorized vehicles on Thursdays)
The start of the trail can be reached via a small tarred road that leads from Bardoneccia to the small village of Rochemolles. From here, the gravel road winds its way up the mountain over steep hairpin bends. After a wooded section, you reach the dam at Lago di Rochemolles. The lake with small streams and the untouched nature are well worth a photo stop. The path now crosses the river Rochemolles, the surface becomes stonier and the vegetation sparser. You reach a turn-off to Reiugio Scarfiotti, about halfway along the tour. It's worth stopping here for local dishes in this dream location, on the way there or back. In the next section, the route climbs uphill in many hairpin bends on a rough, sometimes loose surface. The last part of the narrow track is challenging with some deep potholes and large stones. You reach the Colle del Sommeiler at the end. At an altitude of 3000 m, this is the highest passable point in the Alps, with a breathtaking view of rocks, glaciers and Lago Sommeiler.
Restriction: closed on Thursdays!
Toll: The toll, amounting to 10 euros per vehicle (as of 2024), is to be paid directly at the beginning of the gravel road in Rochemolles.

We arrived in front of the barrier on a closed Tuesday evening. There is a nice picnic area in front of the barrier right by the stream, where many off-roaders have gathered to spend the night in their 4x4s. Tip: Information from the friendly cashier. If you pass the ticket booth before 8.30 in the morning, you don't have to pay anything. After that it is 8 € Some portals state that the track is only closed on Thursdays. However, it is in fact Tuesday and Thursday as described here

BARDONECCHIA - Starting Wednesday, October 2, a traffic ban for motor vehicles will be in effect on the road to the Sommeiller Pass, from the turnoff for the Scarfiotti Hut to the pass. The ban was imposed by the municipality starting this week and will remain in effect until the road repair work is completed. On September 25, the municipality’s technical office requested the implementation of a traffic ban on the road to the Sommeiller Pass in order to begin road repair work. To ensure the safety and protection of the public, access to the Sommeiller Pass will be prohibited for cars and motorcycles for the entire duration of the work. The contractor carrying out the work must mark the work zone with temporary vertical signs, as required by the new traffic regulations. The police will monitor the road during the duration of the driving ban and impose fines and penalties for violations of the regulation.
