The 22 km tour in the Ligurian hinterland passes by several high peaks offering stunning panoramic views. It runs parallel to the SS582, which leads directly to the coastal town of Albenga on the Mediterranean Sea.

The route begins at a switchback on the SP44 between Vecersio and Bergalla, with a detour right at the start. Following a paved road, the first worthwhile stop is the Santuario di Monte Croce chapel, which offers a spectacular view of the Riviera. Across from the chapel, a steep hiking trail leads to the summit of Poggio Grande, one of the highlights of the tour. Here, you'll find a fortress complex with partially well-preserved buildings. From the top of the fortress, you can enjoy an incredible view of the valley and the sea.
The endpoint of the detour is reached via a gravel road through lightly wooded terrain, where a small chapel stands on the barren hillside. Returning to the starting point, the route continues on a rugged forest track that leads to a section along the SP52. Near Colle Scravaion, the trail continues on a gravel road, passing several wind turbines. The forest path then becomes narrower and more shaded.
After exiting the wooded area and crossing a ridge, the tour concludes. A giant bench invites you to pause and take in the majestic view of the wind turbines and the Piedmont mountains.

Closure or obstruction

We rode this route on April 24, about 14 days after the heavy rains over Easter. The section from the pass with the turnoff to Monte Croce down through the forest to Villaggio Rocca Barbena had some large mud puddles. We made it through on our bikes; we didn’t even try it by car. Since this section in the forest offers no views, it’s not really worth it. The second section from Colle Scravaion near the wind turbines is mostly good gravel with great views of the mountains and all the way to the sea. There are some great places to stay overnight along the route.
