Similar to giants' tombs, there are lots of rock arches in Sardinia. Holes of all sizes in rocks that look like they were drilled by human hands, but were actually created by Mother Nature - over the course of millions of years, wind and weather have washed the soft sandstone out of the harder limestone. One of these arches, and one with a fantastic "view through", awaits in the rugged mountains of the Supramonte. The trip there can be wonderfully combined with a tough off-road tour.

Start on the SS 125 about seven kilometers south of Dorgali. The inconspicuous gravel path that leads off the asphalt is easy to miss. But still waters are known to be deep and dirty. And so this narrow path shows us its teeth straight away: It jagges up a steep slope in tight serpentines. Rough gravel and the smallest of curve radii require a very good feel for the clutch, gas and brake when it is often necessary to push back. And a head for heights. And a four-wheel drive vehicle that is as short as possible or a light enduro. When you are sitting in the saddle, you should either be able to get your feet safely on the ground or be able to drive around a hairpin bend cleanly without tripping. Otherwise, a fall could result in a claim for insurance.

A look through the Arco Sutta'terra and further along a challenging gravel track. It gradually descends into the valley, but without threatening any hairpin bends or steep sections. We have already done those. After seven kilometers, the gravel fun is over and a stretch of asphalt takes us down to the coast to Cala Gonone.
