If you turn left off the D 900 onto the D 71 in the border town of Le Perthus, you’ll wind your way up through dense pine forest to the Col de l’Ouillat. Situated at an altitude of 938 metres in the Massif des Albères, the pass offers no views due to the dense tree cover, but it does feature a picnic area, a refuge and a spring dedicated to the local shepherd, Manel.

On the left, a track branches off; this public track, surfaced with loose gravel, runs for around six kilometres to a terminus below the Puig Neulos. A detour that is well worth taking, not only for the unadulterated driving pleasure but also for the fantastic views, which on clear days stretch all the way to the Mediterranean Sea.

At 2,156 metres, Puig Neulos is the highest point in the Massif des Albères and marks the border between France and Spain. A distinctive feature is the telecommunications mast on its relatively flat summit. Its name derives from two languages: ‘Puig’ is Spanish and means ‘mountain’, whilst ‘Neulos’ comes from the French word ‘nébuleux’, meaning ‘misty’.
