The Col de Valbelle is suited only for off-road enthusiasts. The recommended route starts in Guillestre, located in the heart of the French Alps, and heads toward Saint-André-d’Embrun, heading in the direction of the Mediterranean.

Starting from the north, the route first takes you to the Risoul Ski Resort at 1,850 meters. This section is still paved. A first panoramic view awaits on a five-kilometer detour to Clot de l'Alpe, crowned by a transmission tower. Afterward, you drive through forested areas, often with moist and sometimes slippery ground. The path then leads through numerous washouts, small fords, and a bumpy track to the summit.
However, the descent to Saint-André-d’Embrun was renovated a few years ago. The worst potholes are now a thing of the past, and the road has been leveled, making it much easier to navigate.

Closure or obstruction

From Risoul, driving over the pass is definitely no longer permitted. All access roads to the trail are closed, and there’s another closure at the second curve. From Saint-André-d’Embrun, there are no driving restrictions, not even on the descent from Col Valbelle to Risoul (only toward Vars). We spent the night on the pass (and had previously stayed further down) and then drove down to Risoul early in the morning, before any hikers or cyclists were out and about. The entire route was relatively easy to drive in a VW California.

Closure or obstruction

After the first few turns driving up out of Risoul, there is a large sign with several messages and, at the top, a "No Entry" sign prohibiting all motorized vehicles from continuing up the mountain. So we decided to turn around and take another trail from the off-road atlas. Cheers to everyone

We had the entrance in Risoul. However, Risoul is full of one-way streets, so it's not easy to find the start. Up to the COL, the route is challenging, but very beautiful and easy to ride. Downhill without any problems, there are even small rest areas every now and then, even downhill a very nice route. according to the signs, the route is closed from December to May.

Very nice trail, as well as the view. Could be ridden on a motorcycle without any problems
