The route is actually very scenic. But only if you’re traveling without a motor. At the top of the Col du Granon, there’s a sign prohibiting vehicles from continuing north past the last parking lot. There are also driving restrictions at other points along the upper section. At the very least, the upper part of the route is definitely off-limits to vehicles.

Col du Granon
The south-west ramp of the Col du Granon is still child's play. From Saint-Chaffrey, the route is almost leisurely along the well-maintained D 234 to the 2413-metre-high pass. After that, however, the fun is over - in both senses of the word: the east-west ramp is on an unpaved military road with only coarse gravel, which is also marked as a Route Militaire. It is forbidden to drive on it unless you get a special permit from the soldiers on site. Before you get this, however, you should think carefully about whether you have enough control over your motorcycle, as the passage is a challenge even for professionals with small off-road bikes. If you don't want to take it on, simply turn back at the apex. Alternatively, you can take the Col de Buffère to the north-west instead before heading back to the starting point.

Conditions, closures and tips — from members who drove here recently.
After approx. 1km no longer passable due to landslide. Turning possible with great skill. Also no longer passable for motorcycles, as the landslide blocks the entire lane. According to the military, you can drive up there without a permit. They were very surprised when I asked for permission. He just said that he didn't have a key to unlock the fort. Because he thought we wanted to have a look inside. Very very nice and friendly soldiers on site. They even spoke a little German.
