Based on the previous comments, we did the tour by bike today. We can't confirm the comments about the road being closed. There are no restrictions whatsoever—just a sign recommending 4x4 vehicles. As a result, there were quite a few vehicles on the road today, Sunday. The route is great. Starting from Salardú, the scenery is definitely much more beautiful.
Coth de Varrados
South of the French-Spanish border, the Carretèra Varrados is one of the most scenic off-road tracks in the Pyrenees. The only downside is that it is closed to motorcycles. Unfortunately, the guys with the loud sports enduros have gone too wild again. And the leisurely enduro hiker has to suffer as a result.
The starting point of the route is the winter sports resort of Salardù on road no. 28 in the Arriu Garona valley. A small asphalt road takes you up to Bagergue, at the end of which the gravel begins. It first follows a stream for a while, crosses it and then offers a top-class off-road adventure: a decent track winds its way up the steep slope in countless curves and bends, offering the most wonderful views of green valleys and white mountain peaks. On the right is the Refugi Cabana Moredo, and straight ahead is the Coth de Varrados. At 2050 meters, it is the highest point of the Carretèra Varrados. Views? Endless.
From here, the path goes gently downhill in moderate curves. The path crosses a small stream and then enters the forest. Now the views are over, but the track shows its most pleasant side and allows for unadulterated off-road fun. A short asphalt section follows, then the end point is reached in Arròs.
