In northern Albania rises a mountain range approximately six kilometers long and three kilometers wide, known as the Munella Mountains. On average, these mountains stand around 1,400 meters high, with their highest peak, Maja e Kryqit, reaching 1,990 meters. This remote region boasts high biodiversity, hosting several marten species that are now rare in Europe.
While this enchanting area can be explored on foot, it’s far more enjoyable on two or four wheels. A trail running the length of the Munella Mountains from Gjakza to Lumbardhë is ideal for such an adventure.
The trailhead is located just beyond the village of Gjakza, right off the A1 highway. The off-road experience begins immediately: the narrow and winding trail climbs steeply up the mountain. Tight sections are frequent, and the switchbacks are often so sharp that reversing in a 4x4 is necessary. However, the fine gravel surface poses no particular challenges.
Once the trail reaches its summit, it becomes noticeably tamer. It winds gently along a mountain ridge, passing through a mining area and gradually widening, as trucks also use this section. A few more switchbacks later, the trail transitions to asphalt at Lumbardhë. From there, the road descends in a series of winding turns, eventually connecting to the SH 5 main road.

Closure or obstruction

We tried out the trail today. After the first turnoff off-road—where the path veers left—there’s a steep section with lots of large boulders. You can go around some of them, but not in a van or a Sprinter-class vehicle. They don’t have enough ground clearance. A Defender or Land Cruiser should be able to handle it.
