During the Cold War, Albania did something entirely unexpected: in 1961, it broke ties with the Soviet Union and, in 1968, withdrew from the Warsaw Pact. This left the country isolated. Fearing invasions from both East and West, Albania constructed thousands of bunkers along its borders and sealed off border regions. This isolation worked to the benefit of nature, which flourished undisturbed. Today, the former border zone is part of the European Green Belt, a continent-wide conservation area along the former Iron Curtain. In Albania, several protected areas have been established along the Green Belt, including the Luzni-Bulaç Nature Reserve southwest of the town of Peshkopi.
A scenic natural road passes through this reserve, offering romantic spots for overnight stays and breathtaking views. The starting point is located along the track leading from Rreth Kale to Burgajet, near the village of Selisthë e Sipërme. This easy-to-navigate road winds uphill through dense forests, reaching a small pass at an elevation of 1,280 meters. Here, the forest opens up, revealing stunning views back into the Drin Valley. In places, the wheels bump along old cobblestones once traversed by medieval ox carts. Between Okshatinë and Boçovë, the route intersects with the paved SH 6. Turn right, and after three kilometers, you’ll arrive in Shupenzë.

A scenically stunning but challenging off-road route! The drive through the Lutsni-Bulak Nature Reserve captivated us with its incredible variety of landscapes. Absolutely worth seeing! However, the route is definitely not for off-road beginners. Deep potholes, severe erosion and, in places, very narrow, overgrown sections require a fair bit of off-road experience and good vehicle control. We were driving our Toyota Hilux and wouldn’t really recommend the route for larger or wider vehicles. Anyone wanting to avoid scratches to their paintwork should also look for a different route. 😉 Our verdict: A beautiful, varied and, in places, challenging route for experienced off-roaders with a suitable vehicle. A real highlight in terms of scenery, but one that shouldn’t be underestimated when it comes to driving skills!

I agree with last year’s comment. It starts off easy. Once you reach the plateau—or actually, about 1 km before that—it gets tough. For me, it was more or less dry. In some places, the trail is barely visible anymore. When it’s wet, it becomes extremely difficult, even impassable. The descent at the back is manageable again. Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture—I had to concentrate so hard on navigating through it😜.

This route is by no means easy. It contains some steep and rocky sections, including places with deep washouts and mud holes. Enduro experience is definitely required here. Due to the many wash-outs and gullies, 4 × 4 vehicles definitely need a good amount of ground clearance and articulation. Very overgrown in places, therefore not recommended with larger campers!
