Guri i Kamjes
The Guri i Kamjes is a rock formation located between the villages of Dardhas and Prenisht, south of Pogradec. Rising 1,471 meters above sea level, the formation creates a shape at its peak that locals describe as resembling a ship on the sea: 100 meters long, 80 meters wide, and 70 meters high. Its rock is harder than the surrounding clay, which allowed nature, over millions of years, to erode the clay and leave the Guri i Kamjes standing. Albanians hold a special connection to this formation, and in 2002, it was designated a natural monument.
Visitors wishing to see the Guri i Kamjes up close can pair the experience with an exciting off-road adventure. Exciting because sections of rough gravel, deep cross ruts, and slippery earthen passages add a touch of challenge to the drive. Coming from Pogradec on the SH 3, turn right just before Leshnicë to reach the village of Dardhas. Here, the track winds sharply uphill with switchbacks, requiring vehicles with good ground clearance to navigate the deep cross ruts. Shortly after, the Guri i Kamjes reveals its best side, making a photo stop a must.
At elevations between 1,300 and 1,400 meters, the track continues to twist up and down through rugged, isolated mountain terrain. Occasionally, a village or a few people appear, but there is little civilization to be found in this remote area. Passing the villages of Mjaltas and Marjan, the track gradually descends into the Devoll Valley, where it connects with the SH 71.
