Antique track to Burrel
If you enjoy exploring historic trails, the route between Krujë and Burrel is sure to delight you. Part of this journey follows an ancient caravan road with origins dating back to Roman times. Moreover, this antiquity-filled tour offers plenty of offroad fun on a challenging gravel track.
From Krujë, take the paved SH 38 eastward into the mountainous terrain of the Qafë-Shtamë Nature Park. The grippy surface, sharp curves, and switchbacks provide a perfect start for lean-angle-hungry enduro riders. At an elevation of 1,250 meters, the mountain road reaches the Qafë-Shtamë Pass. Just east of the pass, a tragic incident occurred in April 1997. During the nationwide unrest triggered by economic troubles and financial losses, locals attempted to steal metal objects from an abandoned ammunition depot to sell on the black market. They accidentally detonated a bomb, causing an explosion that claimed 23 lives.
Immediately after the pass, the offroad challenge begins in earnest—steep, tight turns on coarse gravel with deep holes and ruts zigzag downhill. The track often clings precariously to sheer mountain slopes, making it difficult for larger vehicles to navigate. After a few kilometers, the trail becomes less intense. From here, you can fully enjoy the offroad thrills the route offers. Technically demanding but manageable with some experience, the gravel track winds gradually down the mountain. At times, the wheels rumble over the original paving stones of the old caravan road, which was still in use until the 1930s. Near the village of German, the gravel track transitions into asphalt as the SH 37 main road begins.
