Approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Albania's capital, Tirana, lies the Mat region. Essentially, it consists of a wide basin surrounded by high, inaccessible mountains. The main town in the region is Burrel, home to around 10,000 inhabitants. In the Middle Ages, Burrel was a stopover for caravans heading east. During the communist era, it housed a notorious prison where political opponents and defiant clergy were incarcerated.

Burrel is the destination of a leisurely gravel tour that begins further east in the city of Peshkopi. The journey starts on asphalt, heading about ten kilometers westward to Rreth Kale. From there, the SH 36 takes over—officially classified as a main road but, in reality, a true gravel track—a delightful surprise! For the first leg, the route closely follows the course of the Drin River. Hairpin bends and curves abound, as do enchanting views of the river valley. If it weren’t for the many football-sized potholes in the road, the drive would be pure pleasure. However, keeping an eye on the road is essential to avoid damaging your suspension.
In the small village of Burgajet, the gravel ends and the asphalt begins. A short straight stretch, then a left turn, and you arrive in Burrel.

Very varied route through the mountains and the hinterland. Very scenic in places and sometimes exposed. There are some quaint mountain villages along the route.
