Gorski Kotar
In the heart of this forested low mountain range lies Risnjak National Park – a true highlight. Gorski Kotar is considered one of the greenest and most densely forested regions in Croatia. The park covers approximately 64 square kilometers and is located just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast. Those who venture off-road here can look forward to an impressive mix of karst landscapes, dense forests, and alpine terrain.
Velebit Mountains
Rugged, rocky, and challenging – the Velebit is a classic among Croatian off-road terrain. Challenging trails make this region particularly exciting for experienced drivers. But beginners will also find suitable routes here. A special highlight: our "Canyonland in Velebit" tour – a spectacular route through the wild mountain landscape with magnificent views.
Another must-do in Velebit: the stunning panoramic tour from Sveti Juraj to Stolac. Spectacular hairpin bends, fantastic views of the Croatian islands, and pure driving pleasure await you over 16 kilometers.
In Winnetou's Footsteps
Mile-long routes lead you through the impressive backdrop of the legendary Winnetou films. Here, wild mountain landscapes meet untouched nature – a true adventure for fans and nature lovers. A stop at one of the original filming locations is a must!
Istria – Between Coast and Mountains
The Istrian peninsula on the Croatian Adriatic Sea connects historic coastal towns with a diverse hinterland. Here you'll find Mediterranean olive groves, hilly forests, rocky coastlines, and expansive vineyards. Particularly recommended: the Ćićarija Mountains in the north and the Ućka Mountains in the east. Both offer varied off-road routes with stunning views of the sea and the Istrian landscape.
Culinary Highlights of Off-Road Driving in Croatia
Croatian cuisine is as diverse as the terrain: from rustic mountain dishes in the Velebit to Mediterranean specialties on the Adriatic coast.
In mountainous regions such as Gorski Kotar or the hinterland of Istria, hearty dishes are a must. Popular dishes include "peka" dishes – meat, often lamb or veal, slowly cooked in a blazing oven with potatoes, onions, and herbs. Perfect after a dusty day of driving.
Other true off-road classics include čobanac, a spicy stew made from various meats, or grah, a bean stew often served with bacon or sausage – filling, simple, and perfect for on the go.
Those traveling along the coast or on the islands will be rewarded with fresh fish and seafood. Particularly recommended: grilled squid served with chard and potatoes, or black risotto with cuttlefish – a Mediterranean delight with a view of the sea.
For a quick snack, try burek – a hearty puff pastry filled with cheese, spinach, or meat, which can be found in many bakeries. Serve with a strong espresso or, depending on the region, a traditional mocha.
And to finish off? Fritule – small, fluffy pastry balls with raisins and sugar, often served warm. Accompanied by a glass of rakija – the homemade liquor is a must in Croatia, whether as a welcome or as a digestive after a meal.
Whether rustic mountain cuisine or fresh seafood: in Croatia, off-roading is all about the stomach.
