Lamartine

Description:
There are 2 reasonable routes to the site. You can take the Trail Creek Rd. off I-70 between Idaho Springs and Georgetown. This road goes thru the not-so-ghostly town of Freeland (follow the Gold Mine tour signs). Continue on to the abandoned mine site (and garbage dump) of Bonito. A nasty trail leads on up from Bonito and ends at a small clearing with Ute Creek Rd. on your left. Just below this junction is a meadow--pull in here. As you oull into the meadow, you will see a cabin on your left. This is the upper end of Lamartine. A slightly less nasty road (but still 4WD only) is to take the Ute Creek Rd. directly off CO-103. This road is pretty good at first but deteriorates near the top. You will see the meadow on your left near the top. There are parts of an old processing/sorting house remaining at the lower end and a relatively intact cabin at the top. This is definitely 4x4 on both roads entering this area. There are trails running everywhere. Literally a labyrinth ot trails, where one can get turned around so easily. Most of the trails are easy, it is just getting in and out that can become tricky. Best visited June through October.

Big Scrub Recreation Area

Description:
Big Scrub Recreation Area is located in southwestern Ocala National Forest near the junction of Forest Routes 573 and 588. The area offers primitive campsites, toilets, drinking water and a picnic area. It is just west of the 40-mile white-blazed Prairie Horse Trail, making it convenient for equestrians. Horse trailer parking is located on FR 573 approximately four miles west of Big Scrub. In addition, riders may easily access the trail from this facility where Prairie Trail crosses the forest road. Vehicles and trailers can be parked along the shoulder of the road. The Ocala National Forest offers many challenging and enjoyable locations to ride an OHV. A detailed map that shows some of these locations can be obtained at a ranger office or visitor center. The area around Big Scrub Campground is one where visitors can enjoy riding on deep sandy roads and through the sand pine scrub. There are many unnumbered roads and trails that zigzag throughout the forest. Directions from Altoona, FL: Travel west along State Highway 42 about 10 miles. Turn right (north) onto Forest Route 588. Follow it about 5 - 8 miles.
