Historic Naches Trail

Description:
Although there are some steep grades, most of this trail resides on fairly level ground. Trail conditions vary from dry-to-wet soil to some loose rock. Depending on the time of your and weather, there can also be significant amounts of water on this trail. And, if weather is wet, the trail can get very "interesting". Ophir Pass

Description:
This trail that leads up and over Ophir Pass in southwest Colorado and is worth the trip. It is not an overly difficult trail, but the scenery is beautiful. The trail starts south of Ouray, Colorado off of Colorado Highway 550 (also known as Highway 789). The start of the trail is 16.8 miles south of Ouray. From the hard road you will head west on to CR-8. The Pass itself is breath taking! You will be standing on loose rock, or shake. If you look to the west, you can see down the trail to the beaver ponds. For the next mile or so, the trail is extremely narrow. Two cars cannot fit side by side. KEEP THIS IN MIND. ALSO REMEMBER THAT UPHILL VEHICLES HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY. Continue west on the trail and eventually passing through the town of Ophir. These buildings are all currently homes of people that use them for daily residences, or vacation homes. Further down the road, which is now 630 Road, it turns back in to hard pavement. Stay on this road until you reach a stop sign. This is Colorado Highway 145. If you turn right, you will end up in Telluride, Colorado in about 25 minutes. If you turn left from the stop sign, it will take you back to Silverton and Highway 550. If you head towards Telluride, you will have the chance to take Imogene Pass back to Ouray (Difficult rating). Or you can also take thet Black Bear Pass trail out of Telluride (BDL=Body Damange Likely rating) and it will put you back out on Highway 550 just north of where you started on Ophir Pass. Read more on Imogene Pass and Black Bear Pass in additional submissions. Have fun, but be safe on these trails. One second of inattention, can cause heart ache to you and others on the trail.
